August of 2019. Frank recognizes his own story from twenty years ago in a recently published book. He recalls Marie, with whom he had a relationship before she moved to the United States and vanished from his life. Frank sets out in search of her and finds himself in a United States terrified by a heat wave and mired in suspicion and political paranoia. In pursuit of Marie, he travels into the desert.
