Mitchum portrays Jim Garry, a nomad cowboy. Tate Riling (Preston) sends Garry a job offer letter, and he rides into an Indian reserve to find himself in the heart of a cattle rancher-homesteader fight. That Riling, the man Garry now works for, is dishonest is something Garry does not know, but it is.
