The sheriff of a small city in south Texas must keep custody of a murderer whose brother, a rancher, is hoping to help him escape. After a friend is murdered attempting to muster support for him, he and his deputies - a disgraced drunk and also a old cripple - needs to find a way to hold out against the rancher's hired guns until the marshal takes place. Meanwhile, things are complicated by the presence of a gunslinger - and a mysterious beauty who only arrived on the last stagecoach.
