The two Beaudine brothers initially turn down rancher Hatcher's invitation to accompany him on a cattle drive, but they change their minds when he is shot. As a result, they set out with six other riders, a cook, and a recuperating owner in order to transport 1500 cows to Colorado, which is 1000 miles away. A stampede and a scarcity of water await them along the route. They will encounter mishaps, Indians, two of the riders who want to rustle some of Hatcher's cattle and depart, squatters who demand money, and other obstacles.
